The simulation-based research programs at the Department of Anesthesiolog's Clinical Simulation Center utilize full-scale sensorized mannequins to train and evaluate health care professionals. The goal of these research projects is to quantify the impact of training using simulators on provider skill and ultimately to establish a link between provider skill and patient safety. The methodology that uses simulation training and assessment to measure skill was developed by this investigative team. The methodology is unique, innovative and recognized nationally as some of the most sophisticated efforts to link training, performance and patient safety. The previous work includes studies involving medical students, graduate physicians, residents and nurse anesthetists.
