This lab studies medical comorbidities associated with mental illness and its treatment. A special emphasis is placed on metabolic disturbances associated with commonly used forms of polypharmacy in psychiatry. Studies are performed in human subjects using state of the art metabolic assessments, including hyperinsulinemic euglycemic clamps with stable isotopomer infusions. Current studies are evaluating the effects of valproate augmentation of antipsychotic treatment of schizophrenia with regards to changes in weight, adiposity, glucose and lipid metabolism, and tissue-specific insulin sensitivity.
