My research is focused on technology and outcomes assessment in pulmonary medicine. Our research team has been studying the outcomes of patients with end-stage lung disease, especially patients with emphysema. We have been assessing interventions such as lung volume reduction surgery and lung transplantation. We are currently studying issues related to the selection of patients for lung volume reduction surgery or lung transplant UNOS wait-listing. We have undertaken a project to assess organ (lung) allocation and outcomes of patients listed for lung transplantation.
My other research efforts have focused on venous thromboembolic disease diagnosis, treatment and epidemiology. Our research team has evaluated the efficacy and costs of low molecular-weight heparin therapy, the selection criteria for outpatient deep venous thrombosis therapy, the efficacy of pentasaccharide for the treatment of deep venous thrombosis and pulmonary embolism and the characteristics of patients with deep venous thrombosis. We are currently assessing the effectiveness and accuracy of contrast enhanced helical CT for the diagnosis of pulmonary embolism. We are also studying the efficacy of long-term vs. short-term prophylaxis of venous thromboembolic disease in patients hospitalized for medical illnesses.
