We study the molecular basis of colon and rectal cancer and are identifying predictive factors that will result in more effective staging and selection of therapy of potentially fatal cancers. Our section is involved in developing techniques for the laparoscopic treatment of colorectal cancer and improving multimodality therapy of rectal cancer.

We are involved in many clinical studies including studies comparing surgical approaches for benign colorectal disease, as well as surgical approaches to anal incontinence. We have a long-standing interest in the utilization of radiation therapy, both external and endocavitary, for the management of rectal cancer. Members of the section have developed innovative techniques and multiple research projects using the technique of transrectal ultrasound and are involved in extensive research activities dealing with new diagnostic techniques, especially PET scanning utilizing unique proteins for rectal cancer.

Our section maintains a familial cancer registry, colorectal cancer database and inflammatory bowel disease database with tissue bank correlation for archival and prospective studies.
