Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is accompanied by numerous complications, some of which—such as anemia and secondary hyperparathyroidism (HPT)—occur early in renal failure. Other complications are limited to end stage renal disease (ESRD), such as vascular access for dialysis. Our group has led and participated in studies examining these comorbid diseases processes. Studies of the anemia of CKD patients have examined the safety and efficacy of intravenous iron preparations and the value of eythropoietic agents such as NESP in management of anemia. Ongoing studies are examining strategies for the optimal management of anemia in CKD patients. Optimal management of HPT in CKD and ESRD patients is being investigated by studies using vitamin D analogs and calcimimetics, an investigational agent. The biologic regulation of PTH is being investigated in ESRD patients in a clinical research study. Other ongoing studies in the ESRD population include anemia, a comparison trial of three long-term catheters and the dyslipidemia of renal failure. We also have worked with investigators in the Divisions of Endocrinology, Laboratory Medicine, and Atherosclerosis, Nutrition, and Lipid Research to facilitate investigation in this unique patient population.
